The Corruption of Azim

Several of my nerd friends from middle school and high school still try to get together and hang out. For the past 2 years or so our preferred method of goofing off has been to play Dungeons and Dragons, using Skype to keep me in the loop during our Wednesday night sessions. However, sadly, our weekly sessions have been occurring less and less often and the idea of trying to get together weekly has pretty much gone the way of the dodo. So, at my friend Allan’s suggestion, we have decided to try a play-by-post online version. We are unsure if it will work, but the three of us who are trying it are excited and I think it will work out well. Time will tell, but I like this format as Allan is a pretty good writer and Chris and I will be able to generate fun ideas (I hope). I think the best way to describe Dungeons and Dragons would be “live-action group storytelling.”

Also, we’ve decided to do this online campaign as an evil-aligned campaign, something we’ve been talking about for a while. In other words, we are all playing characters with not-so-honorable intentions.

My character’s name is Asmodeus.

A dark wizard, Asmodeus seeks power and knowledge. Since the Kingdom of Validras and its king have a bad habit of meddling too much in the affairs of others, Asmodeus has decided it must be overthrown so he can pursue his dark magic without looking over his shoulder. To this end he has recruited allies to help him in his quest.

Tyrus was once a noble paladin, but upon return from the war front he discovered that his beloved was betrothed to a neighboring baron to secure an alliance for the kingdom. Betrayed, he rebelled and tried to run away with her. But he found himself unable to call upon his powers for renouncing his oaths as a paladin, and she died during the escape attempt. On the run from the king’s guard and his former allies in the Knights Justicar, he hid in taverns and rundown inns, drinking himself into oblivion. He was ripe for the taking, and Asmodeus introduced the fallen paladin to the enchanting and quirky rogue Killashandra. Though she could not replace his beloved, the part-demon alluring female convinced him to join Asmodeus, who married them. Tyrus fully renounced his oaths and became a blackguard, the embodiment of evil.

Now, joined by the wizard’s bodyguard Gaimon, a sadistic elf fighter, these three have set out to overthrow the Kingdom of Validras.

The interesting thing about the online play-by-post format is that . . . well, you can watch! For those of you interested I give you:

The Corruption of Azim.

Allan will be filling the role of dungeon master, Chris and I the main players, but all three of us are helping create the world, and I'll be interested to see how Allan uses all the various things we're putting in. As I write this, the party has just reached the outskirts of Fallerun, Asmodeus’s home town, with the intent of overthrowing the incompetent mayor Jacob Renferell. They have just been confronted by the local guards standing at the dilapidated city wall, who are demanding payment to enter the city. What happens next? We’ll all find out together. Follow the tab labeled "adventure log" to see what we're doing.

Get a life!

Wow. I am a different anonymous. Hopefully kinder.

I think it's healthy to keep up with old friends. D&D isn't my interest, but it could have been if I had been introduced earlier in my own geeky life.

Dear Anonymous 1,

As Carl's roommate and in his defense, you should probably know that he has an active social life, a girlfriend, a plethora of friends, church activity, school and work. He has a life, and a busy one.
